GABRIEL, WAYNE "TEX" December 24, 1950 to May 1, 2010 RIP
Dear Sandra, Family, and Friends,
I hope you and yours are doing well. It's been almost a years since we lost one of the great rock roll guitarist to CJD, so I thought I might post this note about the one year anniversary of Tex's passing. We cannot forget Tex or his music, nor should we accept, that Tex's death, and many more like his, was NOT a happenstance of bad luck. I just will never accept this. I can't. There has been some new science on CJD and other Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy disease, and I wish to share this with those family and friends of Wayne TEX Gabriel. After a year, some may now want to know the rest of the story about this pesky prion disease 'CJD' that have taken our loved ones. ...
with warmest regards,
terry

GABRIEL, WAYNE "TEX" December 24, 1950 to May 1, 2010 RIP
Wayne "Tex" Gabriel, Guitarist, age 59, died May 1, 2010 in Newburgh, New York. Born December 24, 1950 in Houston, Texas, he moved to Detroit at age three. After an injury sidelined his high school football career, he pursued his love of music by learning to play the guitar. He was a natural talent, with his own distinct, unique style. He moved to New York City in 1970, and within a year, he joined Elephant's Memory, a Greenwich Village band active in New York's music and political communities. Tex was a veteran musician, although he was probably best known for his work as lead guitarist for Elephant's Memory, his work also appears on numerous recordings with many well-known artists. He had a big heart and a strong personality and despite his talent and success, Tex never lost his humility. His greatest love, pride and joy were his daughter, Ataia Gabriel and his son, Savion Gabriel. His warmth and passion for his family and friends will be sorely missed by all who loved him, but his music and his love will be with us forever. He is survived by his daughter, Ataia Gabriel and his son, Savion Gabriel, from his first marriage to Sandra Furton Gabriel; his stepchildren, Sarah Goldfarb and David Goldfarb, and his loving wife, Marisa LaTorre. When he wasn't making music and spending time with his daughter in Nashville, Tennessee, he resided in Carmel, New York with his wife and step-children. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 1:00 p.m., at the chapel at St. Christopher's Inn, Graymoor, Route 9, Garrison, New York. In lieu of flowers, his family has requested that memorial donations to be made to: The Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Foundation, P.O. Box 5312, Akron, OH 44334, St. Christopher Inn, PO Box 150, Garrison, NY 10524, or Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties, Inc., 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, NY 12550.

Seven main threats for the future linked to prions
First threat
The TSE road map defining the evolution of European policy for protection against prion diseases is based on a certain numbers of hypotheses some of which may turn out to be erroneous. In particular, a form of BSE (called atypical Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy), recently identified by systematic testing in aged cattle without clinical signs, may be the origin of classical BSE and thus potentially constitute a reservoir, which may be impossible to eradicate if a sporadic origin is confirmed.
***Also, a link is suspected between atypical BSE and some apparently sporadic cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans. These atypical BSE cases constitute an unforeseen first threat that could sharply modify the European approach to prion diseases.
Second threat

Atypical BSE in Cattle
To date the OIE/WAHO assumes that the human and animal health standards set out in the BSE chapter for classical BSE (C-Type) applies to all forms of BSE which include the H-type and L-type atypical forms. This assumption is scientifically not completely justified and accumulating evidence suggests that this may in fact not be the case. Molecular characterization and the spatial distribution pattern of histopathologic lesions and immunohistochemistry (IHC) signals are used to identify and characterize atypical BSE. Both the L-type and H-type atypical cases display significant differences in the conformation and spatial accumulation of the disease associated prion protein (PrPSc) in brains of afflicted cattle. Transmission studies in bovine transgenic and wild type mouse models support that the atypical BSE types might be unique strains because they have different incubation times and lesion profiles when compared to C-type BSE. When L-type BSE was inoculated into ovine transgenic mice and Syrian hamster the resulting molecular fingerprint had changed, either in the first or a subsequent passage, from L-type into C-type BSE. In addition, non-human primates are specifically susceptible for atypical BSE as demonstrated by an approximately 50% shortened incubation time for L-type BSE as compared to C-type. Considering the current scientific information available, it cannot be assumed that these different BSE types pose the same human health risks as C-type BSE or that these risks are mitigated by the same protective measures.
This study will contribute to a correct definition of specified risk material (SRM) in atypical BSE. The incumbent of this position will develop new and transfer existing, ultra-sensitive methods for the detection of atypical BSE in tissue of experimentally infected cattle.
