18 Forsyth Medical Center patients exposed to CJD; apology issued UPDATED

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. —Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center publicly
apologized Monday after improper sterilization led to more than a dozen patients
being exposed to a rare and possibly deadly disease.
Hospital president Jeff Lindsay said 18 patients were exposed to
Creutzfeldt–Jakob Disease following an operation that was performed on Jan. 18.
There's no known cure for CJD, which can change proteins in the brain and
lead to death. It could take years if not decades for symptoms to show up.
Dr. Jim Lederer, Novant vice president for clinical development, said the
operation was performed on a patient that was suspected to have sporadic CJD.
Novant received the positive test results on Thursday.
While CJD has been associated with mad cow disease, Lederer emphasized this
particular strain isn't mad cow.
There's a low risk for CJD transmission, even during brain surgery, but
Lederer emphasized that any risk for disease transmission is unacceptable.
Following the possible exposure, Lederer said Novant will sterilize
surgical instruments at a higher temperature for a longer time during CJD
surgeries.
